Celebrating their 14th year |
Gathering 2005
The 14th Annual Gathering of the
California Cornish Cousins
was held
May 20-22, 2005
in
Sacramento, CA
emphasizing the
Cornish and Railroads
The focus of the 2005 Gathering was "Our Railroad Heritage." The railroads affected all of our Cornish immigrant families in their travels to the Western mining regions of the United States. They may have started their journeys from their villages in Cornwall to their embarkation ports by train. For those who came to California between 1855 and 1869, they might have been passengers on the Panama Railroad, crossing the Isthmus to the West Coast before setting sail up the long trip to California. Once through the Golden Gate, they may have disembarked in San Francisco or maybe they kept going up through the Delta region to Sacramento and beyond, as far as the river vessels could go. If their final boat destination was Sacramento before continuing their trip up to the gold and silver mines, they got off very near where we will tour during our visit!!!
